Mysterious Drone Sightings in New Jersey Raise Security Fears

In recent weeks, New Jersey residents have been alarmed by unexplained drone activity. The sightings, reported primarily at night, describe drones flying in clusters, often in coordinated patterns. Some witnesses claim the drones are as large as bicycles or small cars, moving in zigzag patterns or hovering silently. Areas most affected include Morris and Somerset counties, which lie within the New York metropolitan area. The presence of drones near sensitive sites, like military research facilities and public infrastructure, has heightened anxiety and fueled speculation about their origin and purpose.
While many sightings have been reported by the public, some cases have also been confirmed by law enforcement and military personnel. The Picatinny Arsenal Police Department has recorded multiple instances of drone activity near their facility. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard observed low-flying drones near their assets by Island Beach State Park. Despite the mounting reports, there has yet to be a clear explanation, leaving many to wonder if these are civilian-operated, government-authorized, or something more sinister.
Federal and State Authorities Respond with Caution
Federal agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, are actively investigating the drone sightings. John Kirby, the White House’s national security communications adviser, assured the public that no current evidence points to a national security threat or foreign involvement. The joint efforts include deploying personnel and technology to determine whether these sightings involve actual drones or misidentified manned aircraft. Some of the reports, upon closer inspection, have been attributed to legally operated civilian aircraft with standard anticollision lights.
Despite these assurances, local officials and residents are not fully convinced. Lawmakers like Rep. Josh Gottheimer argue that vague statements are insufficient to calm public fears. Calls for more transparency and detailed briefings have been growing louder. Gottheimer noted that even if the threat is minimal, the public has a right to know what authorities are discovering. Without clear information, trust in the official response is waning, and concerns about public safety remain unresolved.
Potential Risks to Public Safety and Security
The drone sightings are particularly concerning due to their proximity to critical infrastructure and sensitive areas. Reports have documented drones near the Picatinny Arsenal, a vital military research facility, and over President Trump’s Bedminster golf course. These locations are protected under restricted airspace regulations, making the drone incursions especially troubling. Even if the drones do not pose an immediate threat, their ability to evade detection and approach these sites raises serious questions about security vulnerabilities.
Federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, have emphasized that unmanned aerial systems (UAS) represent a growing risk to national security. Drones can potentially disrupt air traffic, interfere with military operations, or be used for surveillance. The behavior of these drones—such as turning off lights to avoid police detection or flying for extended periods—demonstrates capabilities that go beyond typical recreational use. This potential risk underscores the need for more rigorous monitoring and response strategies.

Calls for Stronger Action and Accountability
Local officials are growing increasingly frustrated with what they see as inaction from federal authorities. Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali expressed disappointment after a recent law enforcement briefing, stating that residents need more concrete answers. Similarly, New Jersey Assembly members Roy Freiman and Mitchelle Drulis have criticized the lack of transparency and detailed information. Their concerns are shared by U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who believes that drones flying near airports, military bases, or public infrastructure should be forcibly removed if necessary.
Governor Phil Murphy has also joined the call for greater accountability. After a conversation with U.S. Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall, Murphy emphasized that the federal government must address the public’s concerns more thoroughly. While investigations continue, the lack of definitive answers is fueling public anxiety. Officials stress that without knowing the drones’ origin or intent, it is difficult to guarantee safety, highlighting the need for stronger, more immediate action.
