Canada Threatens U.S. Power Cutoff Amid Tariff Dispute

Written by Ben Slaughter

A new trade standoff between Canada and the U.S. could have serious implications for millions of Americans. On Monday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford declared that he is prepared to cut off electricity exports to the U.S. in response to President Trump’s newly imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods.

“If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything—including cut off their energy with a smile on my face,” Ford stated during a mining convention in Toronto, according to the Toronto Sun.

Ford emphasized that the U.S. relies heavily on Canadian energy and that Ontario would match U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar. With electricity exports a key component of Canada’s trade with the U.S., a sudden cutoff could have significant consequences, particularly for states that depend on imported power.

“We didn’t start this tariff war, but we’re going to win this tariff war,” Ford added, reinforcing that both federal and provincial governments are aligned in their response.

The announcement comes as President Trump confirmed the 25% tariffs will take effect immediately, with reciprocal tariffs on countries that impose import taxes on U.S. goods set to begin April 2. Trump defended the move, citing concerns over drug trafficking at the border and urging manufacturers to relocate production to the U.S. to avoid the tariffs.

While it remains to be seen whether Ford will follow through on his threat, the situation underscores a crucial reality: the stability of the power grid is never guaranteed. Trade disputes, extreme weather, cyberattacks, and infrastructure failures all pose serious risks to the electricity supply.

What You Can Do to Prepare

Invest in Backup Power SolutionsConsider a generator, solar-powered batteries, or portable power stations to keep critical devices running. Our Generator & Solar Bundle  ensures you have the essentials for an outage.

Have an Alternative Cooking Method – A propane or butane stove can keep you cooking if the power is out for an extended period. ReadyWise’s camping and survival meals are easy to prepare with just hot water.

Ensure Adequate Lighting and Communication – Stock up on flashlights, candles, and battery-powered radios to stay informed in case of an outage. A ReadyWise survival backpack comes pre-packed with essential gear.

Prepare for the Long Haul – While short-term disruptions are the most likely scenario, longer outages could occur. Having a well-thought-out preparedness plan is key. Consider investing in a 3-month emergency food supply  to ensure your family stays secure.

This latest trade dispute serves as a reminder that power grid stability is never a given. Taking steps to prepare now ensures that no matter what happens, you and your family will be ready for any potential disruptions.
