Canada Threatens U.S. Power Cutoff Amid Tariff Dispute
Written by Ben Slaughter
A new trade standoff between Canada and the U.S. could have serious implications for millions of Americans. On Monday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford declared that he is prepared to cut off electricity exports to the U.S. in response to President Trump’s newly imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods.
“If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything—including cut off their energy with a smile on my face,” Ford stated during a mining convention in Toronto, according to the Toronto Sun.
Ford emphasized that the U.S. relies heavily on Canadian energy and that Ontario would match U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar. With electricity exports a key component of Canada’s trade with the U.S., a sudden cutoff could have significant consequences, particularly for states that depend on imported power.
“We didn’t start this tariff war, but we’re going to win this tariff war,” Ford added, reinforcing that both federal and provincial governments are aligned in their response.
The announcement comes as President Trump confirmed the 25% tariffs will take effect immediately, with reciprocal tariffs on countries that impose import taxes on U.S. goods set to begin April 2. Trump defended the move, citing concerns over drug trafficking at the border and urging manufacturers to relocate production to the U.S. to avoid the tariffs.

While it remains to be seen whether Ford will follow through on his threat, the situation underscores a crucial reality: the stability of the power grid is never guaranteed. Trade disputes, extreme weather, cyberattacks, and infrastructure failures all pose serious risks to the electricity supply.
