Sweden, Finland, and Norway Urge Millions To Be Ready For War

As global tensions escalate, Sweden, Finland, and Norway have taken a significant step to ensure its citizens are ready for a variety of potential crises, including military conflict, nuclear threats, and natural disasters. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) has launched an extensive public information campaign, distributing five million pamphlets nationwide titled "If Crisis or War Comes." The initiative comes at a time when Russia has warned of a potential "nuclear response" if Ukraine uses American long-range missiles, increasing concerns that the conflict could widen into a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.

The Swedish government’s call to prepare comes as part of a broader effort to increase national resilience against a variety of threats. The guide focuses on practical steps for citizens to take to protect themselves and their families in the event of an armed attack, nuclear incidents, or other emergencies. The pamphlet not only provides advice on how to stockpile essential supplies and find shelter but also emphasizes the importance of mental and logistical readiness.

The Growing Global Threat

The situation in Europe, and specifically the war in Ukraine, has raised alarms across the world. Russia's aggressive stance and recent threats have added urgency to preparedness measures in Sweden. As President Vladimir Putin signs new military doctrines that lower the threshold for using nuclear weapons, the threat of escalation grows more serious. The Russian government has made it clear that any NATO involvement in the conflict will be seen as direct aggression, leading to fears of broader military engagement.

Sweden, which is not a NATO member but has historically maintained a policy of neutrality, recognizes the increasing risks posed by these geopolitical developments. The pamphlet's introduction reflects this heightened awareness, stating, “The military threat to Sweden has increased, and we must prepare for the worst—an armed attack.”

The MSB’s pamphlet covers a wide range of potential threats, from armed conflict to cyberattacks and extreme weather events. One of the most significant sections addresses the possibility of nuclear warfare, offering guidance on how to protect oneself in the event of a nuclear, biological, or chemical attack. The guide advises citizens to seek shelter immediately during an air attack and assures that after a few days, radiation levels will decrease significantly, allowing people to emerge from cover.

In addition to the nuclear threat, the pamphlet discusses the increasing prevalence of natural disasters, including floods, fires, and extreme weather conditions, which have been exacerbated by climate change. Sweden’s preparedness plan includes measures for citizens to fortify their homes, create emergency kits, and stay informed about possible disasters.

The guide also offers advice on how to respond to terrorism and cyberattacks, two threats that have become more prominent in recent years. The Swedish government urges its citizens to remain vigilant and to take personal responsibility for ensuring their safety and well-being.
