Top 5 Modern Prepper Movies
Survival. It's on the short list of moviemakers' top topics. Whether it's post-apocalyptic, natural disaster or pandemic-related, or even the over-plagued zombie thriller, Prepper movies make for great story telling and good reminders as to why survival preparedness is key.
Here's our (totally subjective!) list of must-see Prepper movies*:
The Purge (rated R)
"Reminder all emergency services will be suspended for a 12-hour period during the purge." The premise of this movie touches on the very essence of prepping. The story line follows a family's ordeal during a 12-hour period of an annual government-sanctioned purge, where any and all crime is legal. It's a thought-provoking thriller that causes one to question morality, ethics and human behavior under a chilling "what if" scenario.
The Impossible (rated PG-13)
This film focuses on a family who looks to spend Christmas holiday in Thailand. When a tsunami strikes separating the family, the story of survival amidst the disaster unfolds. Struggling to reunite, the film presents the journey of separated family members though chaos, loss and destruction.
The Road (rated R)
The Road is set against the backdrop of post-apocalyptic America, where a father and young son travel south on a life-or-death journey. Along the way they encounter groups of cannibalistic survivors while desperately fighting to stay alive so they can reach their destination.
Contagion (rated PG-13)
A deadly new infectious virus spreads across the globe as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) struggles to identify and understand it. Interweaving stories of multiple characters throughout, society begins to unravel as the CDC struggles to combat the virus. This is a well-constructed story dealing with a pandemic scenario and displaying (while fictional) the struggles of a government agency to address a fatal, global epidemic.
127 Hours (rated R)
127 Hours is the movie adaptation of the true story of mountain climber, Aron Ralston, who becomes trapped after a boulder falls and pins his arm while hiking through Utah. Alone, Ralston desperately tries to free himself. He recounts his life and relationships during the 5-day ordeal. Survival instinct and courage take hold and Ralston resorts to extreme measures to free himself.
